Structural design and site engineer

The Offshore Lab (TOL)

ABOUT THE OFFSHORE LAB

The Offshore Lab (TOL) is a technology-driven organization delivering transformative projects that empower communities and address critical infrastructure challenges across Sub-Saharan Africa. TOL’s integrated service offering spans Project Delivery, Capacity Building & Local Content, Technology (VR, AR, 3D Printing, Technical Animation), Consulting, and Logistics Support.

1.1 Role Summary

The Structural Design & Site Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end structural and civil engineering development of projects undertaken by The Offshore Lab (TOL), from concept and detailed engineering design through construction execution and final delivery.

The role is fundamentally design-led and requires the engineer to independently develop detailed structural and civil engineering designs, calculations, models, specifications, and construction drawings for a wide range of infrastructure and building projects using industry-standard engineering software and applicable international codes and standards.

The post-holder shall serve as the primary technical authority for structural engineering design within assigned projects and will coordinate closely with architecture, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical, and project delivery teams to ensure fully integrated and buildable engineering solutions.

Beyond design responsibilities, the engineer shall provide technical leadership during project execution by supervising structural works on site, resolving technical queries, reviewing shop drawings and method statements, ensuring construction compliance with approved designs, and supporting quality assurance, safety, and project delivery objectives.

This role requires a strong combination of analytical capability, engineering judgement, design software proficiency, multidisciplinary coordination, and practical construction experience.

2. Core Responsibilities

Structural & Civil Engineering Design

• Develop detailed structural and civil engineering designs for buildings, infrastructure, and industrial projects in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.

• Perform structural analysis, modelling, and design calculations using relevant engineering software such as ETABS, SAFE, STAAD Pro, SAP2000, ProtaStructure, Tekla Structural Designer, or equivalent platforms.

• Design reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, timber, and foundation systems including shallow and deep foundations where applicable.

• Prepare structural design reports, engineering calculations, specifications, schedules, and detailed construction drawings.

• Review architectural concepts and develop structurally efficient, safe, economical, and buildable engineering solutions.

• Coordinate structural interfaces with architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), geotechnical, and specialist engineering disciplines.

• Participate in design reviews, multidisciplinary coordination meetings, and technical workshops during concept, FEED, detailed design, and execution stages.

• Identify design risks, constructability concerns, and value engineering opportunities early in project development.

• Review and validate shop drawings, fabrication drawings, temporary works proposals, and contractor submittals for structural adequacy and compliance.

• Ensure all designs comply with relevant international standards and applicable local statutory requirements.

Construction Supervision & Technical Delivery

• Monitor and inspect structural works on site to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and engineering intent.

• Provide technical support and interpretation of structural designs to contractors and specialist subcontractors.

• Review method statements, ITPs, RFIs, and site queries relating to structural and civil works.

• Coordinate concrete testing, reinforcement inspections, weld inspections, and other structural quality assurance activities.

• Identify non-conformances and support implementation of corrective actions.

• Maintain structural inspection records, site reports, and as-built documentation.

• Participate in project meetings, technical coordination reviews, and client engagements.

• Support project planning, procurement reviews, claims, variations, and extension of time assessments requiring structural input.

• Ensure structural works are delivered safely and in accordance with project HSE requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• BEng (Hons) or MEng in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.

• Minimum 4–6 years of relevant experience in structural engineering design and project execution.

• Demonstrable experience independently developing structural engineering calculations and detailed designs.

• Strong proficiency in structural engineering software such as ETABS, SAFE, STAAD Pro, SAP2000, Tekla Structural Designer, Robot Structural Analysis, or equivalent.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with BIM workflows including Revit.

• Strong understanding of reinforced concrete, steel, and foundation design.

• Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering interfaces.

Desirable

• COREN registration and/or Chartered Engineer status.

• Experience on industrial, institutional, commercial, or infrastructure projects.

• Experience with temporary works reviews and constructability assessments.

• Familiarity with international design codes including BS, Eurocodes, and ACI.

• Experience with project delivery in multidisciplinary environments.

Skills & Competencies

• Structural analysis and engineering design

• Engineering modelling and detailing

• Technical problem-solving and analytical thinking

• Design coordination and multidisciplinary collaboration

• Strong communication and reporting skills

• Ability to balance design integrity with practical site implementation

• Strong attention to detail and quality assurance mindset

• Ability to work independently and under pressure

Working Conditions

• Combination of office-based design work and site-based execution support.

• Travel to project locations may be required.

• PPE compliance mandatory during site visits.

  • • Occasional extended hours may be required during critical project phases.
