Heavy Duty Mechanic

Job Objectives

  • Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of heavy-duty mobile and fixed port equipment.
  • Ensures equipment operates safely and efficiently to support continuous port operations with minimal downtime.

Office: GDNL Terminal ‘E’ Building Apapa Port Complex, Apapa Wharf, Lagos-Nigeria.

Reports to: Head of Engineering/Strategic Services

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and servicing of heavy-duty mobile and fixed port equipment
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Perform corrective repairs promptly to minimize equipment downtime and ensure operational continuity.
  • Maintain, service, and repair port handling equipment, including cranes, forklifts, trucks, and related machinery.
  • Ensure all equipment operates in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner in line with company and regulatory standards.
  • Identify potential defects and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
  • Interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data to support maintenance activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing equipment performance and reliability.
  • Ensure proper use and accountability of tools, equipment, and spare parts.
  • Coordinate with operations and other maintenance personnel to plan and execute maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and reports.
  • Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.

Competence Requirements

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of heavy diesel engines, hydraulic systems, industrial transmissions, pneumatics, and heavy-duty vehicle chassis systems. Basic machining and welding skills are an added advantage.
  • Diagnostics: Proficiency in reading/interpreting technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical wiring diagrams. Skilled in using diagnostic tools (e.g., scan tools, digital multimeters, pressure gauges).
  • Physical & Safety Attributes: High physical stamina, sharp attention to detail, and the agility to work comfortably in demanding field, dockside, or workshop environments. Deep understanding of industrial safety procedures and workplace risk mitigation.
  • Behavioral Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities with a proven track record of troubleshooting effectively under pressure. Good communication skills for clear fault-reporting and teamwork coordination with supervisors and equipment operators.

Educational Qualification

  • O/Level (WAEC / NECO / GCE / NABTEB).

Vocational Certification

  • Mandatory possession of Trade Test Certificates (I, II, and III) in Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice, Heavy Duty Mechanics, or an equivalent technical trade.

Desired Experience

  • At least five (5) years of active, hands-on experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance and heavy industrial machinery repairs. Experience within a maritime port, terminal yard, large logistics fleet, or heavy manufacturing facility is highly preferred.
