Job Summary

Our client, a reputable healthcare organization in Lagos, is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Scientist to oversee laboratory operations and deliver accurate, reliable, and timely diagnostic services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the receipt, processing, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of patient samples while ensuring strict compliance with quality assurance standards, laboratory protocols, and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate must possess sound technical expertise in laboratory science, demonstrate a strong commitment to quality and patient safety, and be capable of managing laboratory equipment, personnel, and daily laboratory operations efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the medical laboratory to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Receive, verify, label, and process patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Perform laboratory investigations on blood, urine, tissue, body fluids, and other biological samples.
  • Conduct chemical, microbiological, haematological, immunological, molecular, and histopathological analyses where applicable.
  • Produce accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory results for clinical decision-making.
  • Validate and authorize laboratory test results before release.


Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure strict adherence to laboratory quality management systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Implement internal and external quality control programmes.
  • Monitor laboratory accuracy, precision, and turnaround times.
  • Maintain compliance with Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) regulations and other applicable healthcare standards.
  • Participate in laboratory accreditation and continuous quality improvement initiatives.


Equipment & Inventory Management

  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and analysers.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are adhered to.
  • Monitor laboratory reagent levels and consumables.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and coordinate procurement requests.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of laboratory reagents and specimens.


Health, Safety & Infection Control

  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment by adhering to biosafety and infection prevention protocols.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and biological waste.
  • Promote compliance with occupational health and safety standards.


Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Prepare laboratory reports and operational statistics.
  • Ensure confidentiality and integrity of patient information.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, quality issues, and incident reports promptly.


Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care.
  • Supervise laboratory assistants and support staff where applicable.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case discussions, and continuous professional development programmes.
  • Support staff orientation and ongoing training initiatives.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) from a recognized institution.
  • Current practicing licence issued by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
  • Registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria is mandatory.
  • Additional certifications in Quality Management Systems, Molecular Diagnostics, or Laboratory Management will be an added advantage.


Experience Requirements

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years post-qualification experience in a reputable hospital or diagnostic laboratory.
  • Demonstrable experience managing laboratory operations and diagnostic processes.
  • Experience in processing and analysing patient samples using modern laboratory equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality assurance and quality control systems.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an added advantage.
  • Excellent understanding of laboratory safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance.
