Role Description The Election Observer is a volunteer, on-site role based in Osun State, Nigeria. The individual will monitor election activities at assigned polling units, including the setup process, voter accreditation, voting, vote counting, and result transmission, while documenting observations objectively. The role involves completing standardized checklists, gathering relevant data, and reporting incidents such as irregularities, barriers to participation, or potential breaches of electoral rules to PPDC coordinators in a timely manner. The Election Observer will engage respectfully with election officials, security personnel, and voters, without interfering in the process, and must adhere strictly to PPDC’s code of conduct and non-partisan principles. The position may require attending pre-election training sessions, debrief meetings, and providing feedback to support improvements in future observation efforts.
Qualifications
  • Strong observation, note-taking, and reporting skills, with the ability to record information accurately and objectively.
  • Basic understanding of electoral processes, democratic governance, and citizen participation, or willingness to learn through training.
  • Ability to use mobile phones or digital tools for data entry, communication, and real-time reporting during field activities.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills to engage constructively with voters, officials, and community members.
  • High level of integrity, impartiality, and commitment to non-partisan conduct, including respect for confidentiality and ethical guidelines.
  • Ability to work on-site for extended hours on election days, including travel within Osun State as required.
  • Previous experience in community engagement, civic education, or field-based volunteering is an advantage but not mandatory.
  • Minimum of a secondary school education; post-secondary education in social sciences, law, public policy, or related fields is an added benefit.
