ABOUT THE ROLE
The Safety Specialist reports directly to the Plant Safety Manager and provides real-time shift level supervision, ensuring strict field adherence to a safe workplace across the facilities. They proactively identify hazards, enforce safety protocols (such as PPE usage), investigate accidents, and ensure daily operations comply with federal and state regulations to protect workers from injury.
LOCATION:
The role is open in multiple locations, as listed below:
Ikeja, Asejire, Benin, Port-Harcourt, Owerri, Abuja, Challawa and Maiduguri
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor factory floors, material cavities, and loading docks continuously ensuring compliance to fleet safety requirements.
- Inspect physical fencing on high-risk hydraulic presses, balers, and conveyors.
- Ensure 100% proper usage of steel-toe boots, hard hats, and goggles.
- Audit active Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) points and compliance to standards.
- Halt any active process violating safe work procedures immediately.
- Log accident and inspection records under Nigeria Factories Act guidelines
- Audit floor adherence to specialized factory Permit-to-Work (PTW) frameworks.
- Run daily shift-starter safety updates with technical production crews.
- Serve as the chief floor warden during fires or chemical spills.
- Test eye-wash stations, fire exits, and first-aid kits weekly.
- Lead root-cause analysis for any minor injuries or mechanical faults.
- Total turnaround time taken to fix identified physical floor hazards.
- 100% completion of scheduled daily safety briefings per manufacturing line.
- Reducing the plant's Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) month-over-month.
- Fluent in English and clear, relatable vernacular to influence floor personnel.
IS THIS YOU?
- B.Sc. or HND in Engineering, Sciences, or related field.
- Registered member of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) and HSE (Level 3) or an equivalent recognized Health & Safety certificate will be an added advantage.
- Minimum 1–3 years of active field -safety marshalling in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience working around moving machinery, automated conveyor belts, high-voltage systems, or forklift traffic.
- Experience conducting daily or weekly floor walkthroughs using physical or digital safety checklists.
- Basic experience reviewing or issuing hot work, confined space, or working-at-height permits.
- A track record of identifying, documenting, and escalating unsafe behaviours or equipment anomalies to the Plant health and safety manager.
- Safety investigations and root cause analysis behind H&S issues/incidents and the development of pragmatic options for resolution.
- Enforcement of standards and ability to influence people.
- Regulatory Compliance Management skills
- In depth knowledge hazard identification, Risk management.
- Ability to drive and enforce standards and influence people.
- Excellent command of English language required - written and spoken.
- IT Literacy.
