Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, works in close coordination with the Embassies and Consulates of the 27 EU Member States. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and represent the European Union in dealings with the Nigerian government in areas that are part of the EU’s remit.

We offer

The post of Accounts Clerk (Local Agent Job Profile of Group III in the Delegation’s Administration Section, under an indefinite employment contract under reserve of budgetary availabilities and operational considerations. The team consists of 21 people and there are occasional atypical working hours.

Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation, and on the changes of these needs. The successful candidate will serve under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of the Administration Section, providing support, expertise and assistance in the relevant field.

Following Main Tasks And Duties Are Currently Required

  • Liaise with the Delegation’s bank and monitor its bank account;
  • Encode invoices into the Delegation’s accounting system and record financial data in appropriate software;
  • Execute accounting transactions and follow-up outstanding and non-executed transactions;
  • Make sure that financial, budgetary and contractual rules, procedures and deadlines are respected;
  • Follow the consumption of commitment and payment credits;
  • Assist in the preparation of reporting to the Headquarters;
  • Assist in the preparation, finalisation and follow-up of the yearly budget;
  • Assist in procurement procedures;
  • Participate in the creation and optimisation of relevant accounting tools;
  • Follow up, adjust and verify the execution of the authorised budget, in compliance with the financial regulations;
  • Contribute to the preparation of budgetary documents and reports;
  • Provide information and participate in presentations on financial and budgetary procedures;
  • Encoding of travel Invoices in MIPS+;
  • Responding to Ex-Post Control requests;
  • Proper handling of Exception/Non-Compliance Notes;
  • Attending to Suppliers/Contractors on payments and on Legal Entity and Bank Account information;
  • Encoding LEF/BAF of third parties in the SUMMA Business Partners workflow;
  • Act as back-up to the Accountant or any other tasks as delegated by the section coordinator.

The base salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, is set in EUR but paid in NGN (using the InforEuro monthly exchange rate at https://commission.europa.eu/funding-and-tenders/procedures-guidelines-tenders/information-contractors-and-beneficiaries/exchange-rate-inforeuro_en). There is a competitive benefits package, subject to certain conditions, including personal leave days and public holidays, health insurances and a retirement savings plan.

The expected start date will be September 2026.

Minimum requirements / eligibility criteria (necessary for the application to be considered)

  • Secondary education degree.
  • Thorough knowledge of accountancy, finance and clerical tasks.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional as an accountant, financial auditor, budget officer or similar AFTER the obtention of the required diploma.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English (ability to understand C2, ability to read C2, ability to speak C2, ability to write C2).
  • Full computer literacy, covering all relevant MS Office applications.
  • Right to residence and work in Nigeria.

Assets/selection criteria (basis for awarding points to select the best applicant)

  • Post-secondary degree in accounting, finance, business administration or similar.
  • Professional certification as a Chartered Accountant.
  • Experience in a diplomatic mission, a development agency or in a multi-cultural international setting.
  • Experience working with the European Union policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of French at working level.
  • Good command of another European Language.
  • Knowledge of SUMMA.

The process

After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose.
