Job Summary

The UT Level 2 Technician is responsible for performing, interpreting, and managing ultrasonic testing inspections on steel pipes during or after the manufacturing process. Working within a pipe mill environment, the successful candidate will operate both Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems and manual equipment to detect internal, surface, and subsurface defects, ensuring all products comply with strict international pipeline standards (EN10893-11) before shipment.

Key Responsibilities

Inspection & Process Control

  • Monitor, set up, and operate Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems integrated into the pipe production lines.
  • Perform manual UT scans to verify, map, and validate indications identified by automated production line scanners.
  • Calibrate UT equipment, transducers, and automated systems daily using specific pipe mill reference standards (notched or drilled calibration pipes).
  • Inspect pipe body, weld seams (SAW, LSAW, or FCAW), and pipe ends (bevels) for laminations, cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, and wall thickness variations.


Evaluation & Reporting

  • Evaluate inspection data against pipe manufacturing codes and customer specifications, including API 5L, ASTM, ASME, and ISO 3183.
  • Accept or reject pipes based on applicable code criteria and accurately mark defect locations for repair or crop stations.
  • Prepare and sign off on official UT inspection reports and enter quality data into the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or ERP.


Leadership & Quality Assurance

  • Provide technical guidance and supervision to UT Level 1 operators and scanner attendants on the mill floor.
  • Support Quality Engineers during third-party customer audits and witness inspections conducted by agencies such as Lloyd's, DNV, or ABS.


Requirements

Certifications (Mandatory)

  • Valid UT Level 2 Certification in accordance with ISO 9712 (PCN/CSWIP).
  • Valid VT Level 2 Certification in accordance with ISO 9712 (PCN/CSWIP).
  • Must pass an annual vision examination (Jaeger 1 and Ishihara color blindness test).


Preferred Certification

  • Additional Level 2 certification in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) for pipe end inspections.


Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a pipe manufacturing mill or heavy steel tube manufacturing facility.
  • Strong experience inspecting heavy-wall longitudinal or helical submerged arc welds (SAW).
  • In-depth knowledge of API Spec 5L line pipe, EN10219 specifications, and related NDT standards, including ISO 10893.


Required Skills

  • Strong technical ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electronic issues on automated scanning systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in interpreting computerized UT data streams, strip charts, and digital imaging.


Working Conditions

  • Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous mill operations.
  • Comfortable working in a loud, dusty manufacturing environment with varying temperatures.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety around overhead cranes, moving pipe conveyors, and automated machinery.
