General Work Description

The Shipping Assistant is responsible for supporting container loading operations by ensuring that all export containers meet the company's quality, security, and compliance standards before and during stuffing. The role involves conducting pre-loading inspections, verifying container suitability, coordinating with warehouse personnel, agent representatives, monitoring loading activities, maintaining accurate records, and providing timely operational reports to ensure the safe and efficient movement of export cargo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-loading inspections of empty containers and capture clear photographs of containers and drivers for documentation.
  • Ensure containers are properly dressed with the required dry bags, corrugated boards, and kraft paper before loading.
  • Verify the presence and condition of the high-security sealing hook beneath the container door and reject any container that does not meet the required security standard.
  • Carry out container inspections jointly with the warehouse team to confirm suitability for loading.
  • Inspect container security features, including ventilation holes, structural condition, cleanliness, dryness, and overall cargo-worthiness before stuffing.
  • Supervise and monitor container stuffing to ensure compliance with company procedures and loading standards.
  • Report stock levels of container dressing materials to the Logistics Department to prevent shortages.
  • Prepare and submit accurate daily reports of loaded trucks exiting the warehouse to the Port Tracking Team.
  • Maintain organized records and secure backups of all inspection photographs and loading documentation for audit and traceability.
  • Ensure all inspection checklists and loading documents are properly completed, signed, filed, and readily available for future reference.
  • Immediately report any non-compliance, damaged containers, security concerns, or operational issues to the Logistics Department for prompt resolution.
  • Coordinate all outstation operations; Stuffing at designated terminals if the need arises.
  • Adhere to all company safety, security, and export compliance procedures throughout the loading process.

Required Education, Experience, Skills, And Knowledge

  • Minimum of HND or Bachelor's Degree in Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Transport Management, Maritime Studies, or any related discipline.
  • 0–3 years of experience in shipping, warehouse operations, logistics or export documentation is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Nigerian export procedures and the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), shipping lines, and export terminals is an advantage.
  • Ability to use smartphones or digital devices for capturing and maintaining inspection records.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, integrity, and the ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Team player who works productively with a diverse group of people.
  • Excellent communication skills with other employees.
