Department: Cemetery
Schedule: 40 hours per week
Pay: $22.63 per hour
Status: Full-Time

Position Summary
The Foreman assists with the daily operations of Highland Lawn Cemetery by coordinating work assignments, supporting cemetery maintenance activities, and ensuring cemetery grounds are prepared for burials and funeral services. This position provides day-to-day direction to assigned employees, assists with scheduling and work priorities, and helps ensure cemetery operations are performed in a safe, respectful, and efficient manner. The Foreman also serves as the primary on-call employee for cemetery security alarms and assists the Superintendent with operational needs.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the work performed. This list is not intended to be all inclusive.
- Opens and secures Highland Lawn Cemetery gates according to established schedules.
- Locates, measures, and accurately marks gravesites for interments.
- Coordinates and assigns daily work activities for cemetery laborers.
- Monitors the quality and completion of assigned work and provides direction as needed.
- Escorts funeral processions to designated gravesites and assists in maintaining orderly funeral operations.
- Observes interments to ensure proper placement and adherence to cemetery procedures.
- Responds to cemetery security alarms and emergency situations while serving in an on-call capacity.
- Assists with cemetery maintenance operations, equipment usage, and grounds upkeep as needed.
- Communicates with the Superintendent regarding work progress, equipment needs, and operational concerns.
- Promotes a safe work environment by following established safety procedures and encouraging safe work practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of cemetery operations, burial procedures, and grounds maintenance practices.
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and adjust to changing operational needs.
- Ability to lead, direct, and work effectively with employees in a team environment.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with coworkers, funeral personnel, and members of the public.
- Ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to operate computers and standard office equipment.
- Ability to safely operate cemetery maintenance equipment and tools.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and solve routine operational problems.
Education and Training
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two (2) years of cemetery maintenance experience preferred.
- Previous experience directing or coordinating the work of others is preferred.
- Valid Indiana driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, and other environmental conditions. The position requires responding to emergency situations outside of normal working hours while serving in an on-call capacity.
