Climate Change Specialist

Context

UNICEF Nigeria is seeking an International UN Volunteer Climate Change Specialist to support efforts to address the growing impact of climate change on children and communities across Nigeria. The country faces increasing climate-related challenges, including floods, droughts, extreme heat, land degradation, and water stress, which affect children's health, nutrition, education, protection, and access to essential services. Working under the supervision of UNICEF's Climate Change Lead, the selected volunteer will help strengthen climate-resilient programmes, support policy engagement, generate evidence, and promote child-sensitive climate action in collaboration with government institutions, development partners, civil society, and youth-led organizations.

Description of duties

• Support the integration of climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience measures across UNICEF programmes, including health, nutrition, WASH, education, child protection, and social policy.
• Contribute to the implementation of UNICEF Nigeria's Climate Landscape Analysis for Children (CLAC) Action Plan and other climate-related initiatives.
• Facilitate coordination with government counterparts, UN agencies, civil society organizations, academia, development partners, and youth networks.
• Support climate finance initiatives, policy dialogue, technical meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations.
• Conduct research, climate risk analyses, documentation of best practices, and development of knowledge products.
• Monitor programme implementation, track climate-related indicators, undertake field visits, and contribute to reports, presentations, and advocacy materials.

Profile requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Environment, Climate, Energy, Development Studies, or a related field.
• Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in climate change, climate finance, policy, coordination, youth engagement, or knowledge management.
• Experience working with government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, civil society, or community-based organizations.
• Strong analytical, research, monitoring, reporting, and documentation skills.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and partnership-building abilities.

Language: Fluent English.
