To ensure environmental compliance, reduce environmental impacts, and drive sustainable practices within the cement manufacturing operations by implementing effective environmental management systems, overseeing pollution control measures, and ensuring the company meets all regulatory and corporate sustainability goals.
What You'll Be Doing
- Ensure that HBM Nigeria safe work rules and practices are understood, implemented and consistently followed by Environment department employees and contractors.
- Set environmental department long, medium, short term goals and objectives in line with plant objectives.
- Define, follow up and optimize environmental expenses
- Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures
- Ensure adoption and adherence to HBM Nigeria standards, norms and best practices
- Manage the performance of the environment department, including effective use of the Performance Indicators.
- Ensure the performance management of your N-1s.
- Create and maintain a motivating work environment within the environment department
- Build skill development programs for environmental personnel and evaluate their performance.
- Ensure regulatory compliance of environmental activities and use of alternative fuels and secondary raw materials.
- Work with the community relations Manager in identifying local stakeholders (institutions, political figures, associations, site neighbors) and their expectations - Developing communication and regular contacts with them.
- Participate in meetings of regional and local professional networks dealing with environmental issues
- Assures the interface with environmental auditors and controlling bodies and implement requested improvements.
- Develop the environment-related roles and responsibilities of all plant management levels and the corresponding skills required.
- Maintain an environmental data base system that contains all environmental data, permits and regulatory requirements.
- Analyses the environmental impacts of plant operations and ensures that adequate plans are in place to minimize them.
- Checks that all environmental regulations that apply to operations are known, understood, and programs in place to meet requirements.
- Develop and maintain an environmental management system for the plant.
- Ensures that during normal plant operations, it complies with all the statutory/ legal environmental requirements by the state and federal government.
- To promote plant image as responsible for its environmental obligations.
- To generate required environmental reports for local authorities i.e. ISO 14001 compliance, plant environmental reports, environmental compliance/ performance reports etc.
- Manage Plant environmental and other plant aesthetic projects.
- Development and maintenance of plant’s environmental management plan.
- Development and management of plant’s environmental audit schedules.
- Drive environmental performance and provide periodic reports to the Plant Manager
- To coordinate with process and quality department to enhance plant efficiency to achieve environmental KPIs.
- To initiate actions to prevent environmental non-compliance.
- Drive and follow up on the implementation of Biodiversity Management and Quarry Rehabilitation Plan
- Initiate and organize Environment Awareness Program/Talks/Activities.
- Drive housekeeping within the plant.
- Drive the implementation and maintenance of integrated management system (QMS and EMS) in the plant.
- Other assigned duties.
Requirements
Critical Knowledge
- Understanding of kiln operations, raw material handling, clinker production, and cement grinding.
- In-depth knowledge of local (e.g., NESREA, FMEnv) and international environmental laws, permits and standards.
- Knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plan (EMP), and audit requirements.
- Knowledge of major pollutants (CO2, NOx, SO2, PM) and control technologies (e.g., bag filters, ESPs), stack emission testing, monitoring equipment, and compliance reporting.
- Understanding of GHG protocols as it relates to carbon footprint accounting and emission limits.
- Best practices in waste segregation, recycling, and disposal, particularly hazardous waste like kiln dust or used oil.
- Knowledge of co-processing and the use of alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) (e.g., tyres, RDF, biomass).
- Competence in ISO 14001:2015 and implementation of EMS.
- Ability to develop and maintain procedures, policies, and documentation related to EMS.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment, discharge standards, and water reuse systems.
- Basics of energy efficiency in cement production and renewable energy integration.
- Direct experience managing environmental impacts associated with kiln operations, quarrying, raw material processing, and clinker production.
- Proven track record in ensuring compliance with local and international environmental regulations (e.g., NESREA, FMEnv, OGEPA).
- Experience in obtaining and renewing environmental permits, including effluent discharge, air quality, and waste management permits.
- Hands-on experience with air emissions monitoring,including stack testing, ambient air sampling, and interpreting results.
- Operational knowledge of air pollution control equipment (e.g., bag filters, electrostatic precipitators).
- Familiarity with GHG inventory reporting, CO2 reduction strategies, and thermal substitution programs.
- Practical experience in waste management, especially handling industrial and hazardous waste.
- Implementation of co-processing programs, including sourcing and managing alternative fuels such as RDF, biomass, or used tyres.
Critical Experience
- Experience conducting water audits, managing wastewater treatment systems, and driving water reuse/recycling projects.
- Participation in energy conservation programs, preferably within kiln and grinding operations.
- Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, and maintaining ISO 14001-compliant EMS.
- Involvement in internal and external audits, with successful closure of non-conformities and implementation of corrective actions.
- Experience preparing environmental reports for regulatory authorities and corporate headquarters.
- Familiarity with EIA, EMPs, environmental audits, and sustainability reporting framework.
- Coordination with government agencies, environmental consultants, and NGOs.
- Experience in environmental risk assessments, incidents,investigation, and development of emergency response plans.
- Knowledge of spill response, fire prevention, and environmental hazard mitigation.
- Participation in corporate sustainability programs, climate action plans, or decarbonized projects.
