Brand & Communications Lead

LibraStrat Consulting Services

Remote
Rackan Technologies is a Lagos-based fintech building cross-border payments that help individuals and businesses move money between Africa and the rest of the world. Its promise is simple: money that goes further, with seamless payments and borderless possibilities.

Rackan operates a Nigerian entity and a registered money services business (MSB) in Canada. Today it serves businesses moving value out of Nigeria at scale, and it is launching products for both consumers and businesses:

  • For individuals: a remittance app that makes sending money home from the UK, US and Canada to Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya fast, reliable and fairly priced.
  • For businesses: multi-currency accounts to collect, hold and pay out in local currencies, major foreign currencies and stablecoins, so African businesses can pay suppliers and get paid globally.

Rackan is a small, ambitious team. The person in this role will shape how Africa and the world see Rackan.

Responsibilities

Brand strategy and identity

  • Define and protect Rackan's positioning, voice and visual identity across the company and both product lines.
  • Build and enforce brand guidelines for everything Rackan publishes, from app copy to event booths.
  • Track brand health: awareness, sentiment and share of voice in Rackan's markets.

Communications and PR

  • Build relationships with tech, business and financial media across Africa, the UK and North America.
  • Write and place press releases, op-eds, founder interviews and announcements for launches, partnerships and milestones.
  • Own executive visibility: speaking slots, panels, podcasts and thought leadership for Rackan's founders and leaders.

Crisis, reputation and stakeholder communications

  • Set up issues and crisis communications playbooks for incidents such as payout delays, outages, fraud or regulatory questions.
  • Monitor social and traditional media daily and respond quickly and calmly.
  • Support clear, compliant communications with regulators, banking partners and investors, working with Legal and Compliance.

  • Tell customer, partner and team stories that build trust in cross-border money movement.

Events and partnerships

  • Plan Rackan's presence at industry events (for example Money20/20, GTR Africa and Moonshot by TechCabal), including sponsorships, booths and speaking.
  • Manage co-marketing with partners and the wider ecosystem.

Internal communications

  • Keep the team aligned on company news, wins and culture as Rackan grows.

Marketing collaboration

  • Work with Product and Growth on launch campaigns, so brand and performance marketing tell one story.

Expectations: building the team

This is not joining a team; it is building one. Within 12 months, Rackan expects a working Brand & Communications function with clear processes, a small team and visible results.

First 30 days: learn and audit

  • Learn Rackan's products, customers, markets and regulatory context.
  • Audit Rackan's current brand, channels, media coverage and competitor positioning.
  • Present findings and quick wins to leadership.

By 90 days: foundations

  • Ship a brand and communications strategy for the next 12 months, with goals and a budget.
  • Finalise brand guidelines, messaging and tone of voice for both product lines.
  • Set up a content calendar, media list and approval workflow with Product, Legal and Compliance.
  • Put a crisis communications playbook in place before the consumer launch.

By 6 months: momentum

  • Lead launch communications for the consumer and business products.
  • Land consistent coverage in top-tier African tech and business media, plus at least one international outlet.
  • Secure regular speaking and event opportunities for leadership.
  • Define the team structure and make the first hire (for example, a content and social specialist).

By 12 months: a function, not a person

  • Run a small team with clear roles, targets, and agency or freelance partners where useful.
  • Report quarterly on brand health, share of voice, coverage and content performance.
  • Make Rackan a name people in African fintech recognise and trust.

Strong performance in this role leads to Head of Brand & Communications, with marketing, PR, events and internal communications reporting into it.

Requirements

4–6 years of brand, communications or PR experience, with at least 2 of those years in fintech, tech or financial services.

Must have

  • 4–6 years in brand management, corporate communications, PR or brand storytelling, in-house or at an agency.
  • At least 2 years in fintech, technology, banking or another regulated industry.
  • A portfolio of campaigns, launches or media coverage led end to end.
  • Excellent written English: press releases, op-eds, social copy and executive talking points.
  • Working relationships with tech and business journalists in Nigeria or across Africa.
  • Experience handling a sensitive issue or crisis in public.
  • Comfort working alone at first: setting priorities, building processes and delivering without a big team.
  • A degree in Communications, Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing, English or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

  • Experience with cross-border payments, remittance or B2B fintech.
  • Exposure to UK, North American or pan-African audiences.
  • Event planning or sponsorship management at industry conferences.
  • Experience hiring or managing a small team, agencies or freelancers.
  • Basic design and video skills (Canva, Figma, CapCut or similar).
  • Professional membership, such as NIPR or CIPR.

What's On Offer

  • A rare chance to build a brand and communications function from day one, with a clear path to Head of Brand & Communications.
  • Direct access to founders and leadership, and a real say in how Rackan shows up.
  • Competitive pay, with details shared during the process.
  • Exposure to cross-border fintech across Africa, the UK and North America.
